I’d like to inform all my readers about healthy nutritional habits that they can adapt into their own diet and lifestyle. During this post I will focus on one of my favorite sports food, beets.
Many athletes rely on sugar filled sports energy drinks for pre-competition or pre-race boosts. I never got on that bandwagon, but I have jumped on board with beetroot juice! Beets are becoming very well known in the sports world as a performance enhancing food. They are rich in nitrates, and when nitrates are derived from vegetables it increases oxygen delivery to muscles by improving blood flow. Nitrates essentially bring oxygen to the muscles fairly quickly, making long, difficult workouts less difficult.
Beets also contain folate and betaine, both of which help to lower levels of inflammation in the body, helping with the recovery process and fighting off illness. Beets are also high in potassium and help to balance electrolytes.
My favorite way to get my daily dosage of beets is in a smoothie. Mixed with spinach, banana, mango, almond milk, chia seeds and nut butter, you have a great and healthy boost to start your day!
Another product I use is from a company called “Kronobar”. They make a pure beet powder that can be mixed with water before your training. I take this 1-hour before my morning training.
Also!! Beets aren’t only for athletes!! Beets can lower your blood pressure as the nitric oxide helps to relax blood vessels and improve blood flow. The phytonutrients in beets also help to ward off cancer, the betaine reduces inflammation, protects cells and helps to prevent chronic disease and the immune boosting Vitamin C never hurts!
I’d say that beets are unBEETable in the nutrition world!
